A previously healthy 34-year-old man presents to a walk-in clinic with an 8-day history of cough that began after a cold. The cough is now productive of small amounts of clear to yellow sputum and keeps him awake at times. He has no shortness of breath, chest pain or wheeze. He does not smoke, takes no regular medications, has no known drug allergies and says he needs "something stronger" because he cannot miss more work. On examination he looks well, and the chest is clear to auscultation with no focal findings.
