Case 1 of 2Pregnancy and Reproductive HealthPregnancy termination

A 26-year-old woman, G1P0, presents to a family medicine clinic requesting termination of pregnancy. Her last menstrual period was 7 weeks ago, and she had a positive home pregnancy test after levonorgestrel emergency contraception failed to prevent pregnancy. She has had mild spotting for 2 days but no pain, takes no medications, has no allergies, and has no intrauterine device. After counselling she is certain of her decision. Abdominal examination is normal. Transvaginal ultrasound shows a single intrauterine gestational sac with a yolk sac and an embryo with crown-rump length consistent with 7 weeks, no adnexal mass and no free fluid. Serum beta-hCG is 48 000 IU/L; her blood group is A positive.
