A 29-year-old man presents to the emergency department 1 hour after a low-speed motor vehicle collision in which the airbag struck his face. He has severe right eye pain, tearing, photophobia and a sensation of something in the eye. He does not wear contact lenses and has no medical history, regular medications or allergies. On examination, visual acuity is 20/25 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye. The eyelids have no laceration, the pupils are equal and reactive, and extraocular movements are full. Slit-lamp examination with fluorescein shows a 3 mm linear area of uptake on the right cornea with a normal-depth anterior chamber, no hyphema and no infiltrate. The globe is intact.
