Case 1 of 6Drug Prescribing and MonitoringAdverse drug effects (e.g., long QT, rash)

A 19-year-old man is brought to the emergency department by his mother because his neck has been twisted to the right and his jaw has been tight for the past hour. He says his eyes keep rolling upward and he cannot control it. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia 1 week ago and started on haloperidol 5 mg PO BID 3 days ago. He takes no other medications and has no known drug allergies. On examination, he is alert and oriented, speaks with difficulty because of jaw stiffness, and has sustained right torticollis with upward eye deviation. There is no stridor, and muscle tone is otherwise normal without rigidity.
